Seriously, it is like a cow on wheels. Fat, fwd, dull. It isn't a Cadillac, at all. Buick can fill the role with it's big fwd sedan, and in a way it fits it better. But you have to be out of your mind to want an XTS, when you can get a CTS for $500 more.

Why waste production capacity and showroom space for the XTS, when you can use it for a more unique and exciting model ?

One answer: The residents of Boca Raton, FL.

Isn't the XTS in the same size-class as the S-class and 7-series? So why is the CTS, which is smaller more expensive? Just curious why Cadillac thought that was a good idea.

I'm fine with it because it seems to have become their version of a Porsche Cayenne. The profit margins are probably pretty big and that allows them to do V-models and such. Soon enough, the market for floaty Nouveau Devilles will dry up anyway.

Nope, it is a compromise GM made a few years ago when they needed money, and didn't had the cash to develop a real flagship, to replace the ancient STS and DTS. So they made the XTS that fits in between the E class and the S in size, but it is fwd and pretty bad, think of it as a downgraded Audi.

The new CTS goes against 5 Series, GS and E Class, not only in size, but in rwd-ness, driving dynamics, interior quality etc. It only needs a manual.

A FWD platform is cheaper to build.

Does it sell? If it does, why would it have to die? Just because you (and I) don't like the concept of a large floaty FWD boat isn't enough reason to cancel it.

Because despite Caddy's best efforts to steal people away from the Germans, old people still buy Cadillacs... and this is the car for them. I predict in 5 yes or so it will be replaced by a new full size flagship

The car is a big volume seller for Cadillac. The older crowds love it since it is big and floaty and comfortable. I joke with the residents at my job (retirement home) about cars and they love it; 5 have them! It allows them to make silly things like station wagons with manuals and V8s...

Old people don't want a sporty car like the CTS. The XTS is like a 7 series. There's a reason BMW doesn't have an M7; no one wants it. That car is for luxury. As is this

Sadly, the sales figures justify its existence, for now.

You're not crazy, though. It and the SRX are both drags on their image. They're cheap grabs at volume that actually end up hindering Buick.

Hopefully Cadillac will complete the transition away from cheap volume soon.

This car needs to die. I don't like it and for a similar price you can get a completely different class of car that I do like.

You can get it in AWD too I think. Same platform as the Impala so it can't be too terrible... can it?

Exactly.

Old people, I hope you are sitting down for this one, do not give a SHIT if a car is FWD.

The XTS, while not my first choice, is a decent car in all respects and fits its role well.

It doesn't need to die at all...

I think they look quite sharp in person. And if they make Cadillac money so they can make more awesome cars for us, I'm cool with it.

For a Chevrolet or a Buick, no. For a brand that wants to go against the best, yes.

Why is it bad? The interior is CTS quality, and the car is good looking. Just because it isnt the CTS-V that Oppos want, doesnt mean its a bad car at all. If they can pull off the Cien or Elmiraj and bring them to production because of XTS sales, then BY ALL MEANS MAKE THE XTS.

Sales aren't too bad, as it replaced two models, but it isn't what Cadillac should be, or should be going, old people can drive Impala or LaCrosse, just as well, if they don't want good dynamic qualities.

It exists because there is still a market for it. It's the same with Lexus, where you look at the IS, GS, and LS and try to figure how the ES fits, but the ES has the sales figures to justify it's existence. And the XTS was neck and neck with the CTS for sales in 2013 (about 32k units).

You also need to consider the livery sedan market. With the death of the Town Car, Caddy has a good opportunity as the only option (at least based on what I see here in Chicago) that is not a SUV. And what does the XTS have the CTS doesn't? 40 inches of rear seat legroom.

GM will never kill a car that sells well, and the XTS sells. I mean look at the Cavalier. 1982-2005, sold like hot cakes, was a pretty terrible car by today's standards. Regardless, the car sold, and GM (like any business) continued to reap the benefits of low production cost and high profit margin from sales.

That was old GM , new GM hopefully knows that on long term, building brand image, is more important than immediate sales.

I don't think caddy will stop making a car for the olds who just want a giant sedan with 0% sporting pretensions. So long as they keep paying mega-premiums to get them, anyway.
